Utah woman charged with driving school bus while drunk

A former Alpine School District bus driver has been charged with six misdemeanors for allegedly driving her bus drunk with special-needs children on board earlier this year.

Sherry Lee Lund, 52, of Lehi, was charged Tuesday in 4th District Court with one count of driving under the influence and five counts of reckless endangerment, all class A misdemeanors punishable by up to a year in jail.

A summons has been sent to Lund ordering her to appear in court in American Fork on May 31.

Lund was arrested at about 4 p.m. on March 8, after Saratoga Springs police found the school bus parked on the side of the road near Pony Express Parkway and Redwood Road, according to city spokesman Owen Jackson.
Officers "observed the driver was impaired [and] smelled of alcohol," said Jackson, who added that testing showed Lund had a blood-alcohol level of 0.17, which is more than twice the legal limit.

He said there were four elementary school children and a teacher's aide on the bus.

Lund, who had worked as a bus driver for the school district for 27 years, was immediately placed on administrative leave. She resigned on March 10, said school district spokesman David Stephenson.

Bay County students, start your engines: Driver's ed returns this summer

For the first time in almost a decade, Bay District students will be behind the wheel as part of a school-sponsored driver’s education program this summer.

Director of K-12 Services Suzanne Farrar said the program will last three weeks, starting the week of July 11. The program will consist of morning and afternoon sessions, with space for 25 to 30 students in each. Classes will be held at Rutherford High School, one of the few schools to still have an intact driving range after the program was cut 10 years ago during lean budget times.

“It’s an expensive program to run,” Farrar said. “Because it wasn’t required, we felt like it was one of those things we didn’t have to do.”

Ten years hasn’t made the program any less expensive, Farrar said, but the district is getting some help from the Dori Act. Passed by the county last year, the act requires the clerk of the courts to collect an additional $5 from every traffic citation to be used for driver’s education programs. Teachers also have to take online courses to receive an endorsement to teach driver’s education, which costs the district about $5,000 per teacher.

“We have two teachers that hold an endorsement and two that are getting it,” Farrar said. “By the end of the summer, we’ll have four.”

More endorsed teachers will allow more classes at different locations and more flexibility for students. Farrar said for right now, the plan is to keep classes in the summer months and open the program up to more students. The cars, Farrar said, are being provided by Bill Cramer Chevrolet.

Initial registration for the no-cost class will be online and open to any middle and high school student 15 years or older with his or her learner’s permit in hand. Once online registration closes, the district will use a lottery system to select students for the class. At the end of the three weeks, not only will students be safer drivers, Farrar said, but they also will receive a waiver to bypass the driving portion of their license exam.

“That’s a big deal for them,” Farrar said.

Farrar said she does not yet have a definitive date for when online registration will open, but it likely will be toward the end of the school year.
